Primary immunodeficiency diseases are hereditary or acquired. An example is immunoglobulin (IgA) deficiency, in which the body fails to produce enough of IgA, which is found primarily in the saliva and other body fluids that help protect the entrances to the body. People with the condition tend to have a predisposition to allergies or to some respiratory infections.

Secondary Immunodeficiency Disorders

Secondary immune deficiency disease occurs as a result of other diseases. It usually develops after a disease; but it can also be caused by malnutrition, burns, or certain medications. Hypersensitivity reactions, autoimmune disorders, or organ transplants can also reduce the immune system’s ability to fight infections and cause a secondary immunodeficiency disorder. A typical example is HIV/AIDS, where the HIV virus slowly destroys the body’s immune system. With the immune system thus compromised, the body then becomes susceptible to otherwise harmless organisms, resulting in infections of all sorts. Mothers can pass on HIV infection to the growing foetus during delivery or during breastfeeding; and adults can be infected through unprotected sexual intercourse, sharing of contaminated needles for drugs, steroids, or tattoos.
